Why geometry?
First of all, I would like to introduce briefly the
meaning of geometry and why it is important for primary education.
According to the RAE, geometry
it is the branch of mathematic which it is intended for the study of properties
and magnitudes of the space and shapes which are on the plane.
It is also important to be
aware about the seniority of geometry, which its origin is in the ancient Egypt.
However, for my point of view, the most important to know it is the functional
view of this science in order to be aware about its importance. We can find geometry
all around; it could be the part of mathematics which is the closest to our
reality, for example in food, building, medicine, technology… Geometry for
educations it is an essential tool for help the student with their creative
development, it is also important for other subjects, to dominate the physic
space, let the students think, reflect and listen, among others.
In conclusion, we can teach geometry
using games and real situations due to its presence between us, in order to
motivate them and to provide student with a deep learning. Also, as we have
read, it has a lot of benefits which make it necessary to look for innovations
or alternatives ways of teaching geometry in primary education.
Let's start!
